Abul Ala Maududi

One of leading Islamic scholars in early days of Pakistan, Maulana Maududi as he was popularly known, had many literary contributions to his credit. His legendary works included a Tafsir of Quran which is widely published and read even today. He was an active campaigner for making Pakistan a truly Islamic state and led an intense political struggle to achieve this goal. He also campaigned against Qadiyanis and as a result was held responsible for riots in Lahore by the government. Subsequently, he was awarded death sentence which had to be cancelled due to the immense local and international pressure. This commute of death sentence signifies his stature among the muslim world.
He was part of Pakistan's movement but had his ideological differences with the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League. However, after Pakistan was created, he not only shifted here but contributed in every way possible for the betterment of the country. His political struggle formalized into a political party which he founded in early days of Pakistan's independence by the name of 'Jamaat Islami'. This party continues to lead his agenda and ideology of social reform in Pakistan according to Islamic principles.
He breathed his last in 1979 and was buried in his modest home. He was respected throughout his life because of his scholarly work of high quality, modest lifestyle and strict adherence to Islamic principles.
