A German national, Dr Ruth Pfau lived most of her life in Pakistan. She came to Pakistan to treat and care for patients suffering from leprosy - a skin condition that brings lot of distraught to the patient and his or her family. She treated countless patient during her more than 50 years of service in Pakistan. It was because of her dedicated efforts that Pakistan was one of the first Asian nations to become leprosy-free.
Dr Ruth Pfau was awarded honorary citizenship of Pakistan as well as other national awards for her selfless service to those in need. Her death on 10 August 2017 was mourned all over the country as a loss to nation. Different tributes poured in regarding her as Pakistan's mother Teresa and Pakistani lepers' light. All these tributes and many others are a way of thanking the services of Dr Ruth Pfau in taking care of the most neglected and even abhorred people.
